The Incantatory Magic of the Symbolic Gesture

The Incantatory Magic of the Symbolic Gesture

United Kingdom

In “Le merveilleux et le théâtre du silence” (1965), Marie-Françoise Christout states that “the ideal mime recreates the world through the incantatory magic of the symbolic gesture”. This work depicts a direct interpretation of the concept of imprisonment, in response to the current pandemic situation, through a mime performing in a never ending tunnel. Questioning claustrophobia in a broader spectrum (from our over-use of technology, to the typical image of the mime stuck inside the box), repetition and sound distortion enhance feelings of oppression and uncanniness. The mime is like a child, communicating exaggeratedly without language, trying to express deeper emotions and to stimulate the unseen.

Carla Geronimi

I am Carla Geronimi, a Franco-Swiss-Argentinian artist based in London. My practice is multi-disciplinary and uses a wide range of mediums such as video, sound and sometimes performance. My works all aim to create worlds of imaginary places, fictional stories and creature-like characters such as puppets, masks or inanimate objects. I am strongly influenced by Surrealism and explore similar themes such as dreams, identity and memory, with a constant interest in anthropology and psychology. I like to question those ideas with the use of non-coherent story lines, symbolism and absurd narratives with a desire to evoke, to suggest and to stimulate imagination to better navigate reality. My works have been showcased in various places around the world, such as at the Festival del Cinema di Cefalù (Italy), Festival International du Film de Nancy (France), Marienbad Film Festival (Czech Republic), Gallery 46 and Iklectik Arts Lab (London). My pieces were also broadcast for three consecutive years on Resonance Extra Radio for International Women’s Day 2018, 2019 and 2020. After a BA (Hons) in Sound Arts & Design at University of the Arts London, I am currently undertaking a MA in Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, also in London.
